10. Star Wars: The Old Republic | 150,000 Active Players

Coming in at #10 we have BioWare’s 2011 title Star Wars: The Old Republic. The spiritual successor to the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic series, this free-to-play MMO features some of the most epic story-driven trailers I’ve ever seen in video games.

9. MapleStory | 200,000 Active Players

At #9 we have Nexon’s 2003 title MapleStory. This MMO is free-to-play and it’s the only 2D side-scrolling game in the top 10.

8. Elite Dangerous | 250,000 Active Players

At #8 we have Frontier Developments’ 2014 title Elite Dangerous. 1 of the 2 space sim titles in the list, Elite boasts support for VR and a 1:1 representation of the Milky Way galaxy for you to explore.

7. EVE Online | 350,000 Active Players

At #7 we have CCP Games’ 2003 title EVE Online. The other space MMO on the list, EVE features a cut-throat player-driven economy that has been used in economics classes to study how a truly free market operates.

6. Final Fantasy XIV | 1 Million Active Players

At #6 we have Square Enix 2010 title Final Fantasy XIV. The only MMO in the long-running Final Fantasy series. On launch the game was a disaster and had to be completely revamped, which led to a re-release in 2013.

5. Old School RuneScape | 1.25 Million Active Players

Coming in at #5 we have Jagex 2001 title RuneScape. The oldest MMO on the list at still holding strong!

4. Guild Wars 2 | 1.5 Million Active Players

At #4 we have ArenaNet’s 2012 title Guild Wars 2. Guild Wars 2 features a story that is effected by player decisions which is a rare thing among MMORPGs.

3. Black Desert Online | 2 Million Active Players

At #3 we have Pearl Abyss’ 2014 title Black Desert Online. Also known as the “beautiful” MMORPG, Black Desert has some of the most gorgeous character creation in the industry.

2. The Elder Scrolls Online | 3 Million Active Players

At #2 we have ZeniMax Online Studios’ 2014 title The Elder Scrolls Online. ESO features non-linear gameplay and free-roaming exploration.

1. World of Warcraft | 7 Million Active Players

Finally, sitting a-top the mountain at #1 we have Blizzard Entertainment’s 2004 title World of Warcraft. With nearly 60 million players since launch and a re-release of the Classic version, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that WoW is still the most popular MMORPG even at 15 years of age.
